Before the Hustle

It is no secret that prior to having children…I used to be…not a morning person.  I can still remember driving the 11 miles into LA every day to teach (because of LA traffic this drive was well over an hour) and I would get to school about 15 minutes early and I would lock my door… if kids came early… and knock on the door…. I would say, “I am not done with my coffee…I will open the door in a minute.”  They waited so patiently and tried very hard to “give me my morning space”.  As I think back on it now…. I think that is so RUDE of me.

The only times I was ever up with the sun was on visits with my Nanny Sophie.  I remember sleeping and she’d come just check to see if we wanted to join her on her morning walk.  It was a treat because she’d tell us that the whole town was still sleeping…and it was…. it was so peaceful that hour of the morning, but the reality of it was wasted on me… I stopped to check parking meters to retrieve the change left by the people from the day before…. so the motivation was not peace it was money.  These days…. I LOVE the mornings…. for the peace of them…. which I have learned is worth all the money in the world.

In the early morning hours… as the sun just breaks the horizon… there is something so special happening.. it is wordless…. if you have yet to rise with the sun… try it…. I have learned that mornings are the times when normal sounds seem so LOUD.  Think about it… a chirping bird is so loud minus the TV, the cars heading to work, the sounds of mowers and edge trimmers…. and when I rise early and listen…. that soft voice of God…is just louder… and I like that….well sometimes… no…. I like it all the time… but I still have so much to learn… that I sit back and think…. I will never pass this class!

Before the hustle…. is it a secret that the morning is so precious?  Wouldn’t others rise early if they knew how great it is?  Early is different for all of us I know… I am not trying to shove 4:30 am on ya!  I promise…. I never did care for those that said, “If you don’t get up at 5:30 you won’t hear God the rest of the day.”  We all have our own “hustle free” time…. so before yours begins… try setting 10 minutes aside to hear what God is saying.  You may get addicted to it… that is my warning to you.  The day is beginning and as my hustle begins…. I am glad for the 3 hours I had prior to it…. priceless!
