The Best Present

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8wVMxpYSrI  Today a Child is born (Mariah Carey)

As a mom, I remember just about every detail surrounding the best presents we ever got… Sydney, Riley, and Jonathan.  I remember when we coined that phrase, which has been used repeatedly in this house for over 6 years…. each of our children is “The Best Present we ever got” and I can remember the way my heart swelled as each of them understood the magnitude of that statement and then turned around and used it on us!  Sydney says to us, “You are the best mom (dad), I always wanted you for a mom (dad)” Riley says,  “Jesus gave me the best mom (dad) ever”  Jonny says, “I wub you very mush mama”  awww…. they are so cute sometimes.  Last night Sydney said, “My teacher told us once that nobody is perfect.”  I said, “That is true honey”  As we were cuddling and waiting for her pain medicine to kick in she said, “It is not true because you are perfect…. the perfectest mom ever.”  I assured her that I too am not perfect, as we watched The Santa Claus 2 for the 100th time.

It dawns on me that the we can understand the gift that we have in our children and it is no surprise that Jesus came as a baby.  Babies just envelop hope….life… love.   I can imagine Mary looking a Jesus and sharing a glance with Joseph…. amazed at his presence.  I know the big picture of Jesus, but in that stable, a mom and dad were just enjoying a son.  I bet Joseph was trying to make sure it was warm, Mary was listening to Jesus breathe, the two of them probably got very little sleep…. I imagine them having “first baby syndrome” where both of them get up every time the baby does…. the fear of not knowing what the heck you are doing and hoping you don’t break the baby!  HA HA… they had it worse since Jesus was the savior… could you imagine THAT pressure!

I think it is no accident or coincidence that Jesus came as a baby…. so easy to love, so non-threatening….so amazing.  In this season, if you have been intimidated by religion, the church or even people who are over-bearing and rude yet claim to love Jesus…. picture the best present we ever got….as that little baby in a manger…. he grew up like you did, like our kids do… he didn’t come to intimidate…. he isn’t rude….he isn’t religious…. he is just the best present we ever got…. and if you haven’t accepted that gift…. accept him today…. don’t worry about trying to figure everything out before you do it… we figure it out as we go….as we grow…. and when you come in contact with the rude and religious…. just give ‘em some slack… they are probably “pre-adolescent” in this process…. and they too will grow out of it.  I know it is hard to understand people who behave like that, but remember that we are all on our own journey…. even a mother of twins will tell you that each of her children develops at different rates… and if we get caught up in each other we lose the power of being who we are…other’s actions and behaviors are not something we can control…. there are times that we can say “That is not right”  or “That is not OK” but the focus is not on that… the focus must always be our own relationship.   Just think about it today…. and consider it…. think about that little guy in the manger and the sacrifice he made for us…. and just tell him, “Merry Christmas”.   Hug the best presents you ever got…. tell them that is what they are and if you can…. share with them that another baby was given to the world as a present….his name is Jesus….and his birthday is coming up.

Merry Christmas Friends!
